The African American Interest Group (AAIG) was formed in March of 1992 under the auspices of The Franklin County Genealogical & Historical Society (FCGHS). The AAIG mission is to assist the African American community in clearing research hurdles unique to the African American Researcher. AAIG hosts an annual Genealogy conference with nationally known speakers and workshops in all areas of genealogy to enhance research methods and knowledge.
Topics include Basic Genealogy and research including software and internet use, Reunions, Church and School records, Home and Medical histories, DNA testing, Oral History, Military Records, and Writing your Memories. Special Topics relating to African-American Genealogy have included African-Americans on U.S. Postal Stamps, History of African-American's in Columbus Fire and Police, Slave Era Research, Free People of Color and Migration Patterns, Native American Research in African-American Genealogy, Reconstruction and the Freedman’s Bureau. AAIG provides research assistance at the beginning of each monthly meeting.
AAIG currently hosts monthly meetings and presentations at the Metropolitan Library 96 S. Grant Ave., Columbus, OH, 3rd Floor Board Room, on the last Wednesday of each month from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM.
