The first four volumes of Franklin County, Ohio, Chancery records which began in 1823 contain information which in some cases dates back to 1787 when Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory. Chancery records include "bills of particulars, petitions, answers, demurrers, record of hearings, verdicts of juries, and decrees of court, showing term of court, names of litigants, style, and number of case, and date filed. | OHIO SUPREME COURT RECORDS |
| |
Members of the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society located the missing Volumes I, III, and IV of the Ohio Supreme Court records of Franklin County, while inventorying old Franklin County Probate Court records which had been removed from the attic of the old courthouse to Alum Creek building for storage. All Volumes are now at the Ohio Historical Society. A new State Constitution was adopted in 1851 and major changes were made, but this did not affect the action of the courts in these Supreme Court Volumes I, II, III, and IV, all of which occurred before 1839. |

Order Books are the record of the activities of the Court of Common Pleas of Franklin (and every other county) County, Ohio. They are the documentation of everything that happened during a particular day or term and are not necessarily dated as to a particular date but often (early on) just recorded under a heading of Spring term, Winter term. This index was first abstracted by the founding members of the Franklin County Genealogical Society about 1978, before the use of computers, onto 3x5 cards and placed in our master surname index files. This surname file eventually reached, conservatively, 175,000 cards. The best source for conformation of the information recorded here is the microfilm or original record. The index consists of surname, given name and the volume in which the name appeared. A comment, if originally recorded on the card, regarding the reason for the personals appearance in the court is also included. THERE IS NO MASTER INDEX FOR THE PUBLICATION. BE SURE TO CHECK EACH ORDER BOOK FOR THE NAME YOU ARE HUNTING. |

| FRANKLIN COUNTY CEMETERIES |

From the time the pioneers came to the Northwest Territory before 1800 until 1867 there were no official death records. In Franklin County which was organized in 1803 some deaths were reported from 1867 to 1908. To aid researchers, since the early county death records are incomplete and many old cemeteries are now abandoned, moved, poorly maintained, or non-existent, members of The Franklin County Genealogy and Historical Society have been searching for and recording all legible readings in cemeteries established before 1920. The stones were copied in order of location keeping the apparent relationships between families on the same lot. These readings have been compiled with readings done in earlier years. |
